5 Of The Safest Cars In The UK
There’s a lot to consider when shopping for a new or used car to finance. From the look and feel, to the cost, reliability, performance and size, everyone has their own priorities. But something that will (and should!) feature highly on most people’s list is safety.
Whether you’re driving a flashy sports car or a family-friendly people carrier with kids in tow, we all want to know that our car will protect us in the worst case scenario. So with that in mind, let’s take a look at some of the safest new and used cars you can buy in the UK in 2021.
A Note On The NCAP
One of the main indicators we’ll be using in this article is the rating provided by the European New Car Assessment Programme, or Euro NCAP for short. The NCAP is a five star system, with five stars being awarded to the safest cars. As every new car is made available for purchase in Europe, the Euro NCAP puts them through a series of rigorous tests. These tests include front and side impact tests at different speeds, as well as a thorough check of the advanced safety systems like autonomous emergency braking. If you’d like to see the NCAP rating of any car not featured in this article, you can search for more information on their website here.
Polestar 2 – Safest Overall
Currently sitting at the top of the NCAP rankings – in every category – is Volvo’s Polestar 2. This electric car is rated at 93% for adult occupants and 89% for children.
The Polestar 2 is a car that has been designed from the ground up with safety in mind. It’s fitted with multiple radar and camera units, giving the driver excellent awareness of their surroundings. It can auto-steer or brake if it detects a dangerous situation, limit its speed based on road signs and even alert the driver if they seem sleepy or distracted. Inside, the car has front and side airbags, while the vehicle’s frame is designed to give extra protection to its batteries.
Tesla Model 3 – Safest Large Family Car
Another electric car, the Tesla Model 3 rates at 96% for adults and 86% for children. Also testing well by US authorities, the Model 3 has achieved the lowest overall probability of injury of any vehicle ever tested by the U.S. government’s New Car Assessment Program.
The Model 3 features efficient front crumple zones designed to control the deceleration of occupants, while its advanced restraint system keeps occupants safely in place. Front and knee airbags and a collapsible steering column also work to further reduce injury. The Model 3 also uses radar and cameras to warn of forward collisions, blind spots and lane departure, and the car can also automatically apply emergency braking if required.
Skoda Citigio – Safest Used Car
Because the NCAP changes its tests and criteria over time, it can be difficult to compare older cars with newer ones. However, the Skoda Citigo earned a five star rating in 2011 (now expired), with a 89% rating for adult occupants and 80% for children.
The Skoda Citigo has an optional automatic emergency braking system, called City Safe Drive, which can stop the car at speeds of less than 18mph (if you’re buying second-hand, check that your model has this feature). While tests may have become stricter over time, the Citigo is still one of the safest supermini hatchbacks for anyone in the market for a used car.
Volkswagen ID.4 - Safest Car For Child Passengers
The ID.4 comes equipped with IQ.DRIVE® Advanced Driver Assistance Technology. This system uses a front radar, front camera, two rear radars, and eight ultrasound sensors to collect data from surrounding areas and provide audio-visual alerts to the driver if there are obstacles in their path. The system also includes automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go capability, road-sign recognition and parking sensors. All in all this is another very safe electric car.
